Using JAVA applications to access internet in BSNL GPRS / CellOne GPRS

It is a common problem among new GPRS users of BSNL that they cannot access internet using the JAVA apps. This article shows the solution for this problem.

The popular JAVA apps like Yahoo Go, Opera Mini, Nimbuzz Messenger, Gmail Mobile cannot access the network using the default settings sent by BSNL.

First make sure that you have activated GPRS in you account. Click here to see how to activate GPRS in your BSNL mobile.

For accessing GPRS/EDGE using Java apps you'll have to make a new accesspoint and activate that access point. Here are the steps to be performed in a NOKIA handset.

Goto Menu > Settings > Configuration > Personal Config Settings
From Options menu select Add new
Add a new accesspoint
Account Name: javapoint(As you like)
Accesspoint settings > Bearer settings > Packet data accesspoint.
Change the access point to gprssouth.cellone.in
Note: Replace south with your zone if you're not in south zone.
Different zones are north,south,east,west.

*Donot add/change any other settings like Data bearer, Username, password, etc.

Goto Menu > Settings > Configuration > Preferred access point
Select your newly created access point.
Restart the mobile. Now you can access internet using java apps

Steps to activate GPRS / EDGE in BSNL/CellOne Mobiles

First make sure that you have a GPRS/EDGE enabled handset. If you are not sure refer the owners manual or the manufacturer's website.

1. Recharge your account so that your account balance is above Rs 250

2. Sent the message GPRSPRE to 53733. After senting this sms you'll receive an aknowledgement that your request has been received. Usually with in one hour(this can be several hours) you'll receive an sms saying GPRS and MMS has been enabled in your mobile.

3. To browse with your mobile you should have correct settings. To receive settings for your handset sent your mobile phone sent our brand name and model number to 58355
eg. SONYERICSSON T650
NOKIA 5000
With in a few minutes you will receive settings for your phone. Four settings will be sent from bsnl. You should save these settings. The four settings are
1.Internet
2.WAP settings
3.MMS
4.CellOne portal

4. If your mobile supports internet, then select internet settings else select WAP settings. WAP settings are more economical because it will only allow you to browse WAP sites which are mobile optimised.

5. Restart the Cell Phone

Congrats! Now you can access internet from your BSNL mobile

Cellone Portal: This setting will enable you to browse some BSNL partner sites for free. You can buy ringtones, pictures etc from these sites. Only browsing is free. All other websites/WAP sites cannot be accessed.
